This is Anthony Crowley, you know what to do. Do it with style.
goodtobebad: (Default)
★ Character Information ★
Character Name: Crowley. Occasionally goes by Anthony J. Crowley.
Character Age: Over 6000 years old.
Character Species: Demon. Physically, he looks like a human man, except that his eyes are golden and snakelike - he usually wears sunglasses to conceal this. He's also capable of manifesting big black wings, or just straight-up turning into a snake if he wants.
Current Health: In perfect physical health.
Outfit: Black. Black shirt, vest, jacket, leather pants, snakeskin boots (which may just be his feet). Has a skinny silver tie thing around his neck, and the aforementioned sunglasses.

Character Canon: Good Omens
Link to History: He didn't so much fall as saunter vaguely downwards.
Canon Point: Post 2x06 "Every Day"
Canon Iteration: Original canon
Canon Iteration Explanation: N/A

★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills: * Drives really fast
* Good at annoying people
* That's honestly about it, he's otherwise pretty useless.
Canon Abilities: It's tough to pin down Crowley's abilities except to say that they are vaguely reality-bending. In general, if Crowley assumes that something will be true, then it will be. For instance, he assumes that all cars have a CD player in them, so if he were to hop in a military jeep - despite the fact that military jeeps do not have CD players in them, this one immediately would. If he assumes that he can drive 90 mph in the middle of London during rush hour without hitting anyone, then he will. He can also do what he describes as "demonic miracles" which are exactly the same as angelic miracles, except that he's a demon. So he can miraculously save his best friend's priceless first editions from a bomb. He can snap his fingers and repair a cracked headlamp, or release his friend from prison.

I understand that this is very vague, but I won't have him do anything game-breaking, and I won't have him do anything to other characters without prior consent. He's not that kind of demon, anyway.
Role: Myth
Role Qualities/Attributes: He's going to have some cute lil devil horns, because that will annoy the crap out of him.
Role Reasoning: Crowley's relationship to his identity is a very fraught one, and putting him in the "myth" category will only exacerbate this, quite frankly. On one hand, he knows what he is - he's one of the fallen, he's unforgiven, and unforgivable. He's unrepentant as far as that goes, with no interest in "redeeming" himself by Heaven's standards, because he understands that Heaven is messed up. On the other hand, he consistently bristles against the idea that he's just evil. He is not and does not want to be "evil" - he wants to live in the shades of gray, and he doesn't like being boxed into a role - any role, really.

★ Personality ★

Please choose one of the follow options for your personality section. Please clarify which option you have picked and, if option 2, which questions you are answering:

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?

Falling. Crowley's fall was particularly traumatic for him, because of the reason why he fell - he didn't do anything that most people would consider "evil". What he did was question things. He asked why things had to be the way they were, and instead of being listened to and valued, he was cast aside for not living up to expectations. This experience left him (at least outwardly) bitter, cynical, and with a chip on his shoulder toward his Creator. But it also gave him a certain amount of clarity about how morally bankrupt Heaven actually is, which has left him free to side with humanity in ways that his friend Aziraphale hasn't been able to do as much.

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?

Crowley's relationship with Aziraphale is by far the most important in his existence. Crowley was rejected by Heaven, and Hell doesn't exactly encourage healthy relationships among its denizens - but Aziraphale has, from the Beginning (literally), been a kind, loyal, and stalwart friend to Crowley. It's through his relationship with Aziraphale that Crowley realized just how important the world and humanity are to him, and that he wants to share that with Aziraphale. It's ultimately because of Aziraphale that Crowley has been willing and able to actually fight against their respective "sides" - rather than simply running away and leaving the world to its fate. Aziraphale accepts him when everyone else rejected him, and has shown him what a life "on their own side" might look like. He is Crowley's other half.

  • What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?

Crowley would probably be loathe to admit it, but he actually does have a moral code, and a pretty strong one. While he's perfectly fine with annoying people, playing mean pranks on them and otherwise causing inconveniences, Crowley would never do anything genuinely evil. Time and time again, Crowley has gone out of his way to avoid killing - he even avoided killing Job's goats by turning them all into birds. And harming children is especially onerous to him. Crowley will quite literally concoct complex plans to avoid killing kids, even annoying kids. Crowley genuinely loves the world, and loves humanity, and while he sometimes messes with them for his own entertainment, the thought of actually harming or destroying them is completely anathema to him. He's actually quite compassionate under his cynical exterior.

  • What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?

Aziraphale really and truly is Crowley's safe space. He is never more comfortable, never more able to just be himself, than when he's with Aziraphale, hanging out in Aziraphale's bookshop. He frequently removes his sunglasses in the shop, something he almost never does otherwise - a physical manifestation of his comfort level. It'll be interesting to play out how he deals with being separated from his safe space like this, particularly because at his canon point, he genuinely believes that his relationship with Aziraphale is over for good - thus, he has lost his safe space, and lost all ability to truly be himself and feel accepted for who he is.

    〈 PLAYER INFO 〉
    NAME: Froda
    AGE: geriatric.
    PLURK: [plurk.com profile] frodabaggins
RETURNING: Y, Kanan Jarrus [personal profile] kanyounot

    〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Crowley (sometimes calls himself Anthony J. Crowley)
CHARACTER AGE: Technically ageless since he was created Before Time Existed but he looks like a guy in his 30s or 40s.
    SERIES: Good Omens
CHRONOLOGY: Monday After the Apocalypse (that didn't happen) aka post-canon
CLASS: ...anti-hero? Sure. We'll go with that.
HOUSING: Probably with Aziraphale (assuming he's also accepted)

BACKGROUND: Thank Go - Sata - someone, there's a wiki for that.

PERSONALITY: Crowley is a demon who didn't so much fall as saunter vaguely downwards. What this means in practice is that he's not exactly your traditional, totally evil, sadistic, murderous, pea-soup spitting demon. He's more like that mediocre guy in your office who somehow scored a really cushy job, does the bare minimum to get by, and somehow takes credit for all the really good ideas. All his coworkers hate him.

He is, at best (or worst?) a troublemaker, a mischievous trickster type who enjoys inconveniencing people but isn't fundamentally cruel. He'll see a bunch of people at a corporate retreat forced into a paintball battle who secretly hate each other, and he'll give them what they want - turn all the paintball guns into real guns that shoot real bullets - but he'll make sure that no one actually gets injured or killed. As long as you remember that this doesn't, in any way, shape or form, make him nice. It's just more fun that way.

Crowley is also a questioner. He is, after all, the Serpent of Eden - you know the story, Eve, the snake, the apple. All he did was point out that it was silly, leaving one particular fruit tree off limits! And why shouldn't they have knowledge of Good and Evil? Crowley in fact claims that this is how he fell - asking questions. Indeed, he asks questions a lot - he questions the Almighty herself at one point, and is constantly encouraging others to question as well. Crowley always asks why, when others might be more inclined to simply accept things as they are.

It's also important to understand that, while Crowley is fundamentally not human, he's also in some ways gone native. He's lived among humans since the beginning, and he likes them. He finds them clever, imaginative, and generally entertaining. He enjoys their art, their drink, and their inventions. Humanity is far more interesting and unpredictable than either Heaven or Hell, as far as Crowley is concerned, and he does love a wild card. He's not a good person, by any means, but he clearly experiences a certain amount of empathy, from time to time, and has the capacity to care.

Crowley is a very selfish being, all things considered - he wants to preserve the world, and humanity, in large part because they provide him with entertainment - but he does have one massive soft spot, one thing that proves beyond a doubt that he is perhaps nicer than he would like to admit - his name is Aziraphale. Aziraphale is Crowley's best, oldest, and perhaps only friend. They met back in the Garden of Eden and they've been bumping into each other off and on, on accident or on purpose, for the last six thousand years. Despite ostensibly being on opposite sides, since Aziraphale is an angel and all, Crowley is almost absurdly devoted to him. And, since they teamed up with a bunch of humans in order to avert the apocalypse, they're now officially on "their own side" - whatever that means. They've got all the time in the world to figure it out, and for Crowley to figure out what it means to be a demon who apparently no longer works for Hell (?!).

POWER: Reality bending: This is super vague but in general, if Crowley believes or assumes something to be true, then it will be. A good example of this is his assumption that he can drive a 1926 Bentley through central London at 90 mph and not get in an accident. Or said Bentley can be literally on fire around him and he can still drive it from London to Oxfordshire in time for the apocalypse. It definitely has its limitations, however - he can't mess with the fundamentals of the universe in a permanent way, he can't raise the dead or travel through time or alter the laws of physics. He can just make sure that Hamlet is the most popular play of all time, or drop a bomb on a church full of Nazis but make sure his best friend's first editions stay in one piece. They're demonic miracles!

Vice sense: If someone in his general vicinity is having particularly sinful thoughts - thinking about robbing a bank, cheating on a spouse, murdering somebody, etc - he can potentially pick up on this. He'll have to focus in on it to get anything specific, otherwise it'll just be effectively background noise, especially in a city full of people doing more or less sinful things. I'll have a permission post for this and will only use it with the consent of all players involved.

Serpent of Eden: He can shapeshift into a big, black snake with a red belly.

    〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: [ The man on the video looks like he's trying to keep the goth vibe alive wayyyyy past the time when he should've just dropped it. Dressed in black, with red hair that clearly has a lot of product in it, and sunglasses on indoors which just make him look like even more of a tool, he's sprawled lazily on a sofa. ]

So, being kidnapped to another dimension is great and all, yippee, just what I wanted this week, good to see America is just as tedious in this dimension as in mine, but - there's really only one question worth asking, here.

Where can I get a decent drink?

    FINAL NOTES:

    ★ First Impressions

♚ VISUAL: 6' 1", lanky, sharp features, red hair, the golden eyes of a snake. Has a snake tattoo at his right temple. His apparent age is tough to pin down - he looks like he could be anywhere from 30 to 50 years old, though of course he is far, far older than anyone or anything on Earth. He has pitch-black wings, but rarely manifests them, so 90% of the time for all intents and purposes he looks like a normal human being. Albeit, potentially with a slight air of wickedness about him.
♚ FASHION: Always wears black. Almost always wears sunglasses in public. Generally pretty stylish and up-to-date in his fashion sense - skinny trousers, leather jackets, etc.
♚ DEMEANOUR: Crowley moves like a snake stuck in a bipedal human body - his hips sort of go every which way in a stride that's less swagger and more drunk and possibly without a spine.
♚ SOUND: British accent. Occasionally finds himssself sssslipping on his ssssibilantsss.
    ♚ SCENT: Sulfur, brimstone and...cinnamon?
♚ MENTAL INFORMATION: Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, try to read this guy's mind. Just... don't. He's essentially a walking eldritch horror. A mortal trying to read his mind will probably just go mad.

As for his own abilities, he can sense vice. If a character is feeling particularly greedy, or lustful, or whathaveyou, Crowley can sense this (potentially to exploit it). If your character wants to Do a Bad Thing, he can tell. Life in big cities means that vice is sort of a constant background radiation to him, and he's generally not inclined to do much about it, but if you'd like to let me know if it's okay for him to sense this from your character, just drop a comment below!
♚ MAGICAL INFORMATION: Most bog-standard magic is totally ineffective against Crowley, since he's an eldritch immortal occult being with the ability to make reality bend to his will, stop time, etc etc etc. If you play a character powerful enough to fuck with him magically and want to do something like that, let me know and we'll work something out.

    ★ OOC

♚ BACKTAGGING: I'll backtag pretty much forever.
♚ FOURTHWALLING: Not really into "you're a fictional character" stuff. But I'm totally fine with "are you REALLY the snake who tempted Eve???" stuff.
♚ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: As a player, I'm okay with people trying to touch Crowley, just don't expect it to go well! He's really not the touchy-feely sort.
♚ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: He's not really much of a fighter, but also he's an immortal timeless being who can't really be killed, so... up to you I guess! He has reality-bending powers, and although it's possible to harm or even destroy his physical body, that doesn't actually kill him - it's simply an inconvenience while he waits to be issued a new one.
♚ RELATIONSHIPS: If your name starts with A and ends with ziraphale, sure! Otherwise, he won't be interested.
♚ CONTENT WARNINGS: Crowley is from a pretty lighthearted, comedic canon, but nonetheless he is a demon, an ostensible servant of Satan, and thus religious topics will be a frequent occurrence with him. He's pretty irreverent about most of it, but if this constitutes any kind of trigger or makes anyone uncomfortable and you need to opt-out of tagging him, please feel free to send me a PM. I will always honor anyone's request not to tag me.
